Excerpts of recent jury verdict summaries with multi-million dollar awards, as summarized in Jury Verdicts & Settlements:

*Kelly, an incapacitated individual v. County of Snohomish
2017 WL 1411028 (Wash.Super.)
Verdict date: Feb. 13, 2017    Verdict amount: $10,800,000, reduced to $4,320,000

Joel Kelly, a 58-year-old man, reportedly suffered a catastrophic brain injury resulting in aphasia, neurological deficit on the left side, the need to use a walker, memory problems and other mental deficits, and the need for 24-hour care for the rest of his life, as well as a pulmonary contusion, broken sternum, ribs, clavicle and pelvis, and a fractured skull, which required several surgeries to remove a portion of his skull due to excessive swelling and additional cranial surgery to replace his skull and treat complications due to MRSA, when he was suffering from delirium due to an earlier brain injury and was permitted to wander out of a hospital rehabilitation unit and into a construction site, where he fell.

Verdict date: Feb. 16, 2017    Verdict amount: $3,800,000

Eric Schoenfeld, a 64-year-old male attorney, reportedly contracted Legionnaire’s Disease, resulting in cognitive impairments, including loss of concentration, attention, memory and focus, as well as fatigue, emotional distress and depression, leading to inability practice law, retirement from his law practice and a quality of life loss, when he came in contact with a lobby fountain.
