Back to School

September 2, 2011

The start of another school year is upon us. The first day of school, whether you are a kindergartener or about to start your first year of law school, can be both nerve racking and exciting and some are even filled with memorable experiences.  Let’s just say some people have had a more interesting experience with law school than others.

Jon Janes received his law degree from Hamline University School of Law in 2010.  He began working at Thomson Reuters in July 2011 and works as an Account Manager inside (AMi). Jon provides trainings and demonstrations to attorneys and support staff customers on West’s electronic legal products (For example, Westlaw  and WestlawNext ).  Outside of work he likes to stay physically active by playing sand volleyball, wakeboarding, slalom skiing, and football in the summer.  The winter brings lots of downhill skiing, snowboarding, and watching movies.  He also visits the gym regularly to weight train and play racquetball. He is active!

Here is Jon’s funny (not for him, but for those around him) law school story:

“I got into a habit of drinking coffee and lots of it in law school.  One day I had taken the lid off my coffee cup and had it sitting next to my computer.  The professor was in the middle of lecturing and I accidentally bumped my open coffee cup and it spilled all over the table and into my laptop keyboard.  I promptly stood up in the middle of class, yelled an expletive, turned my computer upside down and ran out of the classroom with it to the bathroom.  The class was in utter silence as I exited, but an uproar of laughter followed that I could hear from the hallway.  Surprisingly, my computer still works to this day.  I think turning it upside down and letting it drain out onto the classroom carpet and atrium carpet all the way to the bathroom must have helped!  I came back into the classroom to the coffee spill at my desk.  It was partially cleaned, as my peers had so graciously smeared it around a bit with spare pieces of notebook paper.”

Jane Gazman received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 2002 and her JD from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2007.  She is currently working on her MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. She began working at Thomson Reuters in 2007 and currently works as an Account Manager inside (AMi).  In her free time, Jane enjoys playing tennis, swimming, shooting pool, traveling, photography, listening to The Current, and seeing live music.  She is one busy woman!

Here’s a first year of law school exam story for you from Jane.

“I actually sat in on an exam for a different section of Civil Procedure than I normally attend.  I walked into the classroom where my class usually took place, rather than look at the posted chart of exam rooms to determine if this is the class I should be in for the exam.  I got in right at the start time so I just sat down and started writing away.  It was at least 10 to 15 minutes before I realized the people in the room were not in my section!  I rushed out and was taken into a room by myself to do the correct exam.  It was embarrassing, to say the least.”

Now that you have read about Jon and Jane’s law school experience, we want to hear about your funny, embarrassing, or unusual law school experience!  We will pass no judgment, only empathy and maybe a few laughs.
