Westlaw tip: Use the # symbol as a “go” sign for common stop words

December 1, 2010

From the Westlaw Reference AttorneysThere are several words that are too common to be searched on Westlaw; they’re called “stop words.” You can use the pound symbol (#) at the beginning of the stop word to force Westlaw to search for that exact word. The only word that cannot be searched this way is “the.” Some words, like “no” and “not,” might seem too common but are actually searchable on Westlaw. More common stop words (a, an, if, or, also, though) can also be searched with the pound symbol.
