Westlaw tip: How to find US magistrate judge opinions and recommendations

April 27, 2011

From the Westlaw Reference AttorneysOpinions and recommendations from US magistrate judges are available on Westlaw.  They do not have their own database, but are kept in the normal case law databases.

To pull only opinions from magistrate judges, you can use the judge field restrictor to specify only magistrate judges: ju(magistrate).

If you are looking for only a certain type of document from a magistrate judge (for example, only reports and recommendations) you can further limit your search with: “”report and recommendation”” +50 ju(magistrate).

Note that the search may be worth running in ALLFEDS, rather than simply in DCT, as many Court of Appeals decisions attach magistrate judge recommendations at the end of their opinions.
