Westlaw tip: Finding cases with multiple John or Jane Doe defendants

How can I look for cases with more than one John or Jane Doe as a defendant?

It can be tricky to search, so here’s a tip – type “doe 1” into the query. Frequently the court will refer to them as John Does 1-10 or John Doe 1, John Doe 2, etc.

Below are a two examples of searches in two different databases.

DB:  CA-CS

SEARCH:  statute /5 limit! /p “”doe 1″” /p nam! /5 defendant

DB:  MN-CS-ALL

SEARCH:  “”doe 1″” /p nam! /5 defendant”
