August 4, 2014

Legal solutions TOTWLearning how to navigate and utilize a new product can often be time consuming and a challenge. Many times, legal professionals shy away from investing in new technology because they’re used to their current software and don’t want to take the time to understand an unfamiliar product. Although making the transition to new legal technology may sound a bit overwhelming, the experience can actually be a positive one through tutorials that are easy to access and easy to understand.

In order to implement a simple training process, Westlaw provides recorded webinars and self-paced trained modules for almost all of its products. These are useful training tools as they give you a choice in what kind of tutorial you want to use.

Recorded Webinars:

Westlaw’s webinars are a great way to receive an in-depth lesson on how to use a specific product. Generally, these webinars tend to be around 45 minutes long and are accessible through a live, online training session. If for some reason your schedule doesn’t match up with the live training session, the webinars are recorded regularly so you can watch them at a time that’s most convenient for you.

Self-paced Trained Modules:

If you’d prefer shorter, more segmented tutorial videos instead of watching a lengthy webinar, the self-paced modules allow you to move through training at your own pace. This allows you to break up the training process into smaller sections and also lets you pick and choose what instructional videos you want to watch.

An example of a powerful, self-paced module is WestlawNext Advantages. This specific module helps you explore some of the basic WestlawNext functions like how to search within the system, find court documents and how to take advantage of the provided efficiency tools.

Two influential modules that relate to the tutorial on WestlawNext Advantages are Westlaw Form Builder and Drafting Assistant. The Westlaw Form Builder module informs you on how to search within the system as well as quickly assemble forms. The Drafting Assistant module gives clear instructions on how to research and format documents, along with how to verify citations and create citation lists and reports. Together, these modules give you a solid understanding of each product and how they relate to each other.

Utilizing and taking advantage of the Westlaw webinars and self-paced trained modules are the best way to ensure you’re getting the most out of your subscription.
