Leveraging the Statutes Index

June 28, 2015

Reference Attorneys 30Searching in statutes can be particularly challenging. Not only are statutes not written in sentences and paragraphs, they often read like they aren’t written in English at all. Moreover, two related and interconnected concepts within a single statute could be hundreds of words apart. Instead of searching in statutes, I like to start with the Statutes Index. Our attorney editors classify statutes using plain-language terms and concepts that I can browse alphabetically. It’s a very efficient and straightforward way to find what I need in the statutes.
